After we were married, one of the biggest challenges we faced was the amount of money we were spending on gas. During the first six months of marriage, we both commuted separate ways and often two hours a day of driving. Learning to stretch the dollar with fuel became a quick obsession around our house. Here are a few simple ways we’ve learned to save!
Join Gas Clubs: Many local grocery stores and gas stations in our state offer “gas clubs”. Usually this is where you sign up for a special card and when you have spent a specific amount of money with them, you get several cents off per gallon. We currently belong to two different gas clubs, that way we can save money at the pump on both cars.
Use Your Gas Can: Every once in a while, when prices drop drastically on gas prices, we put a few gallons away in our extra gas can. That way, we always have extra gas for our lawn mower and weed eater. Plus, when it’s time for yard work, we don’t have to waste gas going to town weekly to fill them up.
Drive Smoothly: When I first hear the term “drive smoothly” I thought it was a joke. However, sudden starts and stops really does use a lot of extra gas. Learn to take side roads or roads with smoother traffic. That way you can avoid the constant breaking and stop lights on main highways.
Balance Your Tires: Balancing your tires is another important factor and one that was new to me until I researched saving gas. When your tires are unbalanced, your car sometimes will compensate, thus using extra gas. Try to check your tires on a monthly basis.
Tune Ups: Last, but certainly not least, try to have your car tuned up every few months. A minor tweak here and there can make all the difference in how your car runs and how much gas it eats up when in use. Use your piggy bank to save up for the tune ups, that way you always have the necessary cash for this.
