I was recently given the opportunity to do a review on Rock ‘N Learn’s latest release  Sight Words DVD. Rock ‘N Learn began with the idea of helping children learn by putting educational material together with current music to keep kids motivated and having fun. Rock ‘N Learn programs help students learn math, phonics, reading, early childhood, social studies, Spanish, test-taking strategies, writing, and science.

Rock ‘N Learn’s new DVD Sight Words, help kids read the most frequently used words in the English language automatically. The DVD is designed for Pre-K & up. I let my daughter Emma who is in Pre-K (5 years old) watch the DVD. She is in the very early stages of reading. She is just starting to learn phonics and the sounds of the alphabet so this was very new to her. The characters and music kept her very involved. She sat and intensely watched and participated in the entire show plus the two bonus sections without any interruptions. She really loved it and wanted to watch more. I have to say that it really did get her attention and motivated her to learn.

The only negative that we experienced was that Emma got very upset when she did not know the words, which for her first viewing was a lot. However, that was more due to her issues with perfection and wanting to learn things immediately. I am sure with time it will become easier for her. She did however get some of the words correct. I do wonder if it was just her guessing what would come next or from the pictures then actually learning the word. She seems to work better when actually sounding the words out. But this is supposed to be use as a supplement to phonics-based strategies. So by adding this to her studies she may start reading a bit quicker.

Overall I would have to say that the DVD was a hit. Emma really loved watching it and was challenged by it. I am very interested in checking out more of their products.
