Five Grocery Secrets that Save You Money

When money is tight, one of the easiest places to cut a chunk out of your monthly expenses is to shop smarter at the grocery store. And we’re not talking about switching to a diet of only rice and beans, or packaged blocks of noodle soup. You can actually get great food for a lower price by using some of these five grocery store secrets.

1. Buy Generic Items

If you’re purchasing name-brand items, you’re probably paying a premium just to get a different packaging. The food inside the box, bag, or can is not noticeably different from the item marketed under the store brand. If you’re suspicious, pick up the leading brand and the generic and give the ingredients a quick scan. Comparing the ingredients will show exactly what you’re paying for with the pricier brand versus the generic. Plus, once you get used to seeing the different packages in your kitchen, you’ll never want to go back to paying extra for the name brands.

2. Plan Your List

Impulse buys make up a large portion of your grocery bill, and planning out your list before you head to the store is the best way to keep impulse purchases to a minimum. It also encourages you to pick the meals you will cook for the week ahead of time, which decreases the chance that you’ll have to go to the store again mid-week for a missed ingredient. To give yourself some wiggle room for in-store deals or things you forgot to put on the list, set a specific dollar amount you can spend on non-list purchases each week.

3. Use Coupons

Manufacturers and individual stores release tons of coupons for products that you may be buying anyway. Look at the store circular, Sunday newspaper, and printable coupon websites to find free coupons you may want to use. When you take the coupons to the store, make sure you’re actually getting a deal by comparing the after-coupon price to similar products. Also ask yourself whether the product is something you’d ordinarily buy anyway, rather than purchasing something you don’t need just because you have a coupon for it.

4. Grow Your Own

Growing produce in your own yard is one of the best ways to cut your grocery bill, especially during the summer months. A little garden space can turn into a lot of food, especially if you stick to planting the things that you know your family will eat. Plus, if you use organic  methods and seed, you’ll get organic food without paying a premium. If you can’t bring yourself to garden, at least educate yourself about what produce is in season at any given point and stick to buying those items, which are at their best prices of the year.

5. Stock Up on Sale Items

When you know that your household uses a particular shelf-stable product and you see it listed in the grocery store’s sale circular, go ahead and stock up on it so you can get enough for several months at this week’s low price. Most sales ads run in 6-week to 12-week cycles, depending on the store and region, so don’t bother getting more than you can use in three months. Regardless of what you’ve seen in extreme couponing television specials, you don’t actually need a two-year supply of toothpaste.

Being a savvy shopper requires a little bit of attention, but the time and energy you put into your grocery shopping will pay off big in your household budget’s bottom line. The typical family can cut at least 10 percent off the grocery bill by implementing each of these strategies. In the process, you may even find some inexpensive, nutritious foods that your family loves eating!

New Episode Of Extreme Couponing Airs Tonight

Are you going to watch Extreme Couponing tonight? I am definitely going to catch this weeks episode. I just read an interview that Nathan Engels,  Mr.Coupon did with one of tonight’s couponer, Joni Meyer.

Joni was nominated for the show by other families at her church. Joni does not coupon for stockpiling but to provide food to others in need. She has opened up her home to anyone that may need food and then donates the rest. She really is inspirational and I look forward to finding out how low she gets her pre-coupon total of $3159.30 down to.

You can go HERE to read the entire interview and then make sure to catch Joni tonight on TLC at 9:30pm (EST).

Healthy Couponing

One of the biggest reasons that people give for not using coupons is that the deals are only good on “junk”. However, this is just not true. You may even be able to eat even healthier then you would if you did not use coupons.

If this surprises you, then let me explain.

First start by figuring out what you are spending a month on groceries. Make sure to include ALL expenses- food, paper products, cleaning supplies & health & beauty items.

1. Play the “Drug Store Game”- The first place that you are going to save is on all those household and personal items you are currently buying. Walgreens and CVS have amazing deals to get these items next to nothing, it not free. The goal is to be able to wait till an item is on sale. Then add to that deal by using coupons. When you are getting an item at its rock bottom price you will then stock up. Most items go on sale every 3 months. If you can purchase enough of that item to last till the next deal then you will never have to pay full price. It may take some time, but you are going to want to have at least a 3 month supply on all your household and personal items.

Once you have this down you will be taking a huge chunk out of your monthly budget. You can find drug store deals here on MSSB. Another great place to find deals is on the  WeUseCoupons forum.

2. Stick to the Perimeters- Next you will start saving on your grocery (food) items. If you want to shop healthy, then you will want to stick to the perimeter of the store. This is where you will find all your fresh produce, meats and dairy items. I recommend that you only go down the aisles for those items that you are getting deals on. Use the same mindset as with the drug store deals. Most of these products have a high shelf life so when you find them at their rock bottom price, stock up for at least 3 months. Again the plan is to never have to purchase anything at full price. You may even want to set a specific amount of your budget towards stock up items each week. Just by cutting your expenses on all these items you will be saving a lot.

3. Plan Menu with Sales- This will now free up some money to be able to buy more fresh produce and meats. However, that doesn’t mean that you can not save there either. Try to stock up on meats when they are around $1.99 lb or lower. Also, buy produce that is in season or on sale for around $.99 lb. Don’t forget to check out local farmers markets or produce stands. It is a great way to get the freshest produce while also supporting your local farmers.

Once you know what items are a good deal that week, then plan your menu. If pork is on sale that week, then make a dinner around that and include sides & ingredients that you already have on hand from past deals.

Make sure to keep track of what you are spending. After you put all these steps into practice you will want to add up your monthly expenses again to see how much you are saving. Just by doing these simple steps you should be able to cut your monthly expenses by 75% or more.

It may be true that a lot of the unhealthier items may go on sale more often, but that doesn’t mean you have to buy every deal that comes along. But if you are saving on all the non-food and nonperishable items you are currently buying, it will free up more money to spend on your healthier fresher products.
