Simple Ways to Change Your Habits and Lower Your Gas Expenses

Old habits are hard to break.  We get used to doing things a certain way and we’re not interested in changing no matter what.  But with gasoline exceeding four dollars a gallon it’s time to rethinking our old driving habits to see if we can cut down on fuel consumption.

Fuel efficiency can be done in a number of ways.  By adding just a mile or two per gallon here and there it will add up to significant savings over a period of time.  Oil is a non-renewable resource and when we save on gas, it helps us with our reduced dependency on foreign oil.  Over 50% of our gas comes from foreign lands!

Many of our bad old habits can simply be avoided by-  Driving Sensibly.  Avoid aggressive driving.  In other words steer clear of rapid acceleration and quick braking.  This alone can lower gas mileage up to 33%.

Of course you don’t speed.  Do you?  Speeders rarely get to their destination much earlier than law abiders and waste a lot more gas.  Gas usage goes up considerably at speeds over 60 mph.  For each 5 mph your drive over 60 you can add an additional 30 cents a gallon to your bill, not to mention the cost of a speeding ticket.

When you’re on the highway, use cruise control, which helps maintain a constant speed.  Use the highest gear possible and overdrive gears if you have them.  The faster an engine is turning the more gas you’re using.  Pay attention to your tachometer. Plus, a slower turning engine means less friction and engine wear.

Avoid excessive idling.  Idling gets zero miles per gallon.  It doesn’t get much worse than that.  If you’re stopped for a train or backed up in a fast food take out line or waiting for a drive thru bank teller, stop your engine if you’re going to be idling for more than 30 seconds.  The bigger your vehicle the more gas you’re using even when idling.  It costs less to restart than idle.

Turn off the air conditioning.  It may get hot but try opening a window and breathe in the fresh air.  An air conditioner can lower your mileage by two to three miles per gallon.

Is this trip necessary?  Don’t drive until you have several errands or appointments to combine.  Avoid doing these errands during peak rush times.  If possible, and the distance is short, try walking or riding a bicycle.

Know where you’re going before you start out.  Don’t drive around looking for something.  I’m afraid the good old days of dragging Main Street with friends are gone.  Now, it’s called car-pooling and friends who share the gas bill or drive next time.  Public transportation is also a good option.

Changing your bad driving habits doesn’t cost you a thing but it will pay you big dividends in fuel economy and saving money.

You can also go the extra mile by keeping your car well maintained and using fuel enhancers to help increase fuel mileage. Spending a little money up front to care for your car now can save a lot of money down the road.

All In The Preparation – A Guide to Successful DIY

There are two sorts of DIY in the home. There is that which is borne out of an emergency, following a leak, a rewire, damage or similar and that which stems from a desire for a change. Being fed up of a certain color wall, the wallpaper starting to peel or the woodwork starting to look a bit tired are all ways that a conversation can turn to DIY. Either way it can be a stressful time as it can be time consuming, messy and expensive.

The key to a successful DIY project is planning and preparation. Getting the timing right is essential to avoid paying over the odds and rushing to get the job done. Doing it yourself isn’t always the most frugal way of doing things either – if you lack vision, creativity or patience then you may want to consider hiring a professional. Still, putting your own stamp on a new home or room can be great fun done correctly.

Some hints to get started

Decide first where you want to decorate. If there is more than one room prioritize what can be achieved in the time available. For example don’t start on a complicated area if you only have a weekend to spare or if the in laws are due round. Time pressures or other people’s expectations will only add to your stress and take away the enjoyment of a home project. Think about the time of year – DIY stores often have sales or good deals on around public holidays. At the same they also tend to be busier too, so do your research in advance.

Decide on the look you want to achieve. If you are the sort of person who likes to change things around frequently, go for neutral colors so you don’t have to change your furniture every time you decorate. You can always be bold with accessories like cushions or ornaments, rather than making it harder to remove if you have a change of heart.

Painting is almost always less costly than wallpapering. If you have already fallen in love with a particular wallpaper think about making a feature wall perhaps behind the fireplace and painting the rest. That way you get the best of both worlds. Another alternative is to get samples of the wallpaper you like and get creative by mounting them on a canvas. Makeovers don’t have to be expensive if you think outside of the box.

Paint with colors

When it comes to painting check the state of your walls and woodwork – well prepared surfaces are essential for a good result. Make sure your walls are as smooth as possible before starting to cover them with paint or paper. Avoid making bad colour choices by getting match or tester pots painting the colors onto white paper and sticking them on the walls. Examine each colour under natural and artificial light to check that you still like it from all angles.

To bring more light to a room choose a light sunny color. To create a cozy atmosphere choose a warming tone. To really bring things in under budget choose a match pot color and mix it with a good quality white emulsion to make your own color. Ensure you mix enough to cover the whole room though and mix it well, otherwise it could turn patchy and it would be unlikely that you could recreate the same color again if you ran out.

Bigger projects

If you are tackling a kitchen or bathroom and doing a complete overhaul it really makes sense to take advantage of store sales. It is also recommended you get in the help of a professional. Look up friends or friends of friends who are in the trade and who could help with the work. If you offer to be their laborer and source all the materials yourself they may give you a good discount. For kitchens, look to keep the units and just replace cupboard doors and drawer fronts – that way you can get the complete transformation without the cost of one. It also keeps down on mess and means you can still use the kitchen whilst the work is being done.

DIY can be a fun time especially when it is over and you can sit back and think ‘I did that’. Doing repairs and maintenance yourself and making improvements will also add value to your home. Keeping your property up to date, clean and fresh will make it both pleasant to live in and less of a chore as and when you wanted to move on or rent it out.

Last month I joined a new rewards site called SuperPoints. I like to try sites out before sharing them so I can see for myself if they are worth the time. In the last month I have earned over 700 points (500 points will get you a $5 gift card). It doesn’t seem like a lot, but I did not do much to get the points.

I really enjoy SuperPoints. It has been very fun and easy to use the site. My whole family has gotten involved. My daughter really loves using the SuperLucky button to try to win points. I like that you can cash your points out for cash through Paypal. It is also nice to use them to get gift cards. They make great FREE gifts.

What is SuperPoints?

“The SuperPoints Network is a collection of sites where you can win and earn SuperPoints that can be redeemed for great rewards.” SuperPoints is an invite only site, so you will need an invite from someone to join.

 How can you earn Superpoints?

  •  SuperLucky Button- Simple click the button and see if you win a prize. The amount of clicks you get each day depends on your member level. Gold members and above win when their friends win.

Get Started Blogging- Week #2 Do Your Research

If you have just joined in on the blogging series, you can go HERE to catch up.

So you decided to start a blog. The first and most important decision after making this commitment is what are you going to write about? You don’t have to be an expert on the subject you just have to have passion for it.  You need to enjoy reading about your subject and have the desire to write about it regularly. I would also suggest that you check out the article “The Importance of Choosing a Niche Topic for a Money Making Blog“.

Once you decide on a topic or niche, start researching it. Do a search for blogs with your same topic. If you enjoy what they are writing then add it to your Google Reader. If you don’t have a Google Reader yet, you can set up a free account. If you subscribe to blogs through your Google Reader then as they post new content it will go directly there.

I would add at least 50 different blogs to your Reader. This will help give you an idea of what other bloggers are writing about, give you more knowledge on your subject and also give you lots of ideas to write about.

You obviously will not copy what another blogger has written, but you can always link back to another site in your article as an example or an article for them to read. Make sure to always give credit to other bloggers work. You never want to just copy and paste another bloggers work either unless you have direct permission from them.

The one thing you don’t want to do while reading other blogs is to compare yourself to them. Especially if they have been around for a while and are very successful. This would always discourage me. Instead look at them for inspiration.

Get Started Blogging- Week #1 Choosing To Blog

I have been contacted by many people asking for help starting a blog. So I decided to do a series on Blogging. I will be adding a new post every Monday with homework for you to do during the week. This 12 week series will walk you through setting up a blog, how to get traffic to your blog and how to make money from your blog.

With kids starting back at school, this seems like a great time to get started with blogging. I started this blog in 2009 without any knowledge or experience. I have learned a lot but it took me a lot of time to search things out and find the answers I was looking for. I hope I can provide a one stop source for all your blogging needs.

Week #1

The two questions I always get from people is “How much will it cost?” and “How much can I make?”. I will attempt to answer these questions first.

How Much Will It Cost?

Blog Hosting- You can get a free blog through sites like Blogger or WordPress, but I would not recommend this if you are serious about making money from your blog. You can get a self hosted blog for as little as $10 a month.

*If you have a blog through blogger and would like to switch to WordPress- Blogelina can do the transfer for you.

Blog Domain- If you choose a self hosted blog, you will then have to get your own domain name. You can get your domain for around $10 a year.

*We will talk more about these later.

Advertising- You can pay to advertise your site on other sites. The fee varies between sites. This would be an option only if you choose. There are various free ways to advertise your site that we will also be discussing later.

As you can see, you can get started for less then $20. There are always coupon codes out there to help you save off your initial payment and also plans were you can save if you pay up front for the year or more.

How Much Will I Make?

This is a much more difficult question to answer. Yes, you can make money from your blog. You can do this by using affiliate sites, pay per click sites, advertising on your blog and selling products. The amount you will make can vary greatly from site to site. Traffic plays a huge part in the amount you can make. Obviously the more people that sees your blog the better chances you have of making money from them directly or indirectly.

There are blogs out there that are making hundreds or even thousands a month. However, according to a survey done in 2008 on ProBlogger, more then half of the bloggers say they make less then $99 a month.

Other factors that affect the amount of money you make are the time you spend on your blog and networking, your blog topic or niche, your content and your experience. Therefore, it is impossible and would be immoral of me to tell you that you will make a certain amount of money.

The best recommendation I can give is not to get into blogging for the money. I started my blog to share my savings with others and to try to help them do the same. I didn’t even know that I could make money from my blog at that time. The money I make from it is a bonus.

If your focus is to just to make money, then blogging will be more of a chore and your readers will feel that. If you have passion about what you are writing about, people will come back to read some more. So you want to focus on writing good content and let the money come naturally.

This Weeks Homework:

This week I just want you to give some thought about blogging.

~Is this something you would enjoy to do?

~Do you have the time to blog? You will want to write at least 3-4 post a week, sometimes more depending on your topic.

~What is your reason to start a blog? Is your reason strong enough to keep you going? There is nothing worse then blogs that posts are always started with, “Sorry I haven’t posted lately….”.

If you answer yes to these questions, then please join me next week when we will talk about choosing your blog niche.

5 Steps To Starting A Blog. Plus 50% Off Step-By-Step Video Tutorials!

Turn Your Blog Into Cash!

So you know you want to start a blog but you’re not sure how to go about it. Here are five easy steps, and a few good tips, to make the process quick and easy.

#1 Choose your niche. What’s your blog going to be about? You may want to do a bit of keyword research here. If you already have a business, then your blog will be related to your online business and those keywords, however, you can still narrow your blog niche.

For example, if you have an online business on dog training, your blog could be about positive reinforcement training, about housebreaking, or even about a tangent topic like feeding your dog – because health is important to training.

#2 Choose your platform. WordPress, Blogger, Typepad and Moveable type are only a few of the options. You can also explore the blogging platform your website host offers. Analyze and compare each platform to find the one that best meets your needs. Many people choose WordPress because of its easy to use nature and the ability to customize your blog.

#3 Create your blog site. Depending on the platform you’re using you will either be working with the template and customizations offered or you can have your blog site designed by a professional. There are thousands of templates, some paid and some free, available by WordPress developers and they’re easily customizable – you can get an original WordPress blog.

#4 Choose your blogging schedule and blog. How often are you going to blog? Create a realistic schedule and stick to it. Remember that even if you decide you’re going to blog once a week, you can always blog more. Blogging less than that isn’t recommended. Blogs are active sites and people expect frequent content updates.

#5 Drive traffic. Once you feel comfortable with the number of posts you have on your blog and you’re happy with the way it looks, it’s time to drive traffic to your blog. Social networking, PPC, registering your blog with relevant directories and commenting on other related blogs helps drive traffic.

Starting a blog isn’t the difficult part, the tough part is deciding to actually start! Visit Blogelina’s Blogging Video Tutorials to learn more about what a blog can do for you. If you’ve ever wanted simple, step-by-step info on how to work with your blog, these tutorials are perfect!
